Tanzania: Mother of Late President John Magufuli, Dies in Chato

Suzana Magufuli, the mother of Tanzania’s former President John Pombe Magufuli, has died after a long illness at her home in Chato, Geita Region.

The death was confirmed on May 25, 2026, by Magufuli’s daughter, Jesca Magufuli, during a phone interview with a local media outlet.

According to Jesca, Suzana Magufuli died at around 7 p.m. at her residence in Chato after battling illness for an extended period.

Our grandmother, Suzana Mussa, passed away at her home in Chato after a long illness. The family will announce funeral arrangements later. The Lord has given, and the Lord has taken away,” Jesca said.

The family has not yet released further details regarding burial plans or funeral ceremonies.

Suzana Magufuli became widely known in Tanzania during the presidency of her son, John Magufuli, who served as the country’s fifth president from 2015 until his death in March 2021.

Magufuli, often remembered for his strong leadership style and infrastructure-focused administration, remained closely connected to his home district of Chato throughout his political career.

Following news of Suzana Magufuli’s death, condolence messages began circulating online from political figures, supporters, and residents from different parts of Tanzania.
