A Catholic nun’s detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as she was heading to Sunday Mass has reignited debate over the agency’s immigration enforcement practices and drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Sister Leticia Ugboaja was taken into immigration custody near the U.S.-Mexico border as she walked to Mass. She was released the next day after a group of lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz, whose office helped facilitate her release by working with federal officials, intervened.
The arrest quickly made national headlines, partly due to Sister Leticia’s status as a Catholic nun but also because she was allegedly on her way to Mass at the time she was apprehended.
While immigration enforcement has historically been a politically divisive issue in the United States, the public response to this particular case appeared unusually uniform, with overwhelming criticism leveled at ICE.

Crucially, very few prominent comments defended ICE’s actions. Even many who favor stronger border security argued that the detention of the nun in this instance appeared to be a misstep and was avoidable.
The involvement of Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz also played a role in shaping the narrative. Her intervention underscored that concerns over the nun’s arrest transcended party lines and signaled a broader sense of unease about how the incident had played out.
ICE has not publicly explained why Sister Leticia was detained or suggested that she posed any threat to public safety. The agency has generally stated that its laws apply to all individuals regardless of their profession or religious affiliation, but a specific justification for this case has been lacking.
