Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, is a Caribbean nation located on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Its capital city is Port-au-Prince. Haiti became the world’s first Black republic after a successful slave revolt against French colonial rule in 1804. The country has a rich cultural heritage influenced by African, French, and Caribbean traditions, but has also faced decades of political instability, economic hardship, natural disasters, and gang violence.
At least 78 people have been killed in gang clashes in Haiti since Saturday, according to the United Nations, as violence spreads across parts of Port-au-Prince and forces thousands to flee their homes.
Hundreds of Haitians have been displaced after renewed gang violence erupted in Port-au-Prince, forcing families to flee toward roads leading to the country’s main airport.
