Burundi

The Republic of Burundi is a landlocked nation located in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, situated at the intersection of the African Great Lakes and East Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, with the scenic Lake Tanganyika forming part of its southwestern border. Burundi’s history is marked by its pre-colonial identity as an independent kingdom, followed by periods of German and Belgian administration. Since regaining independence in 1962, the nation has evolved into a unitary republic, defined by its resilience and its commitment to national unity through the landmark Arusha Agreement.

Burundi is geographically diverse, characterized by a hilly and mountainous landscape that has earned it a reputation for natural beauty within the Rift Valley. Its economy is fundamentally agrarian, with a vast majority of the population engaged in subsistence farming and the production of key exports such as coffee and tea. The nation is organized into provinces and communes, with Gitega serving as the political capital and Bujumbura acting as the primary economic hub and largest city. As a member of the East African Community (EAC) and the African Union, Burundi plays an active role in regional integration and diplomatic cooperation, striving for a prosperous future centered on sustainable development and social cohesion.
