American social media personality Ashlee Jenae has been laid to rest in her hometown of Paulsboro, New Jersey, weeks after her death during a vacation in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
However, her fiancé, Joe McCann, did not attend the funeral.
Speaking publicly for the first time since Ashlee’s death on April 8, McCann described her as his closest friend and someone he deeply trusted, saying he remains devastated by the incident.
According to the BBC, McCann said Ashlee’s family prevented him from participating in the funeral arrangements as tensions continue over the circumstances surrounding her death.
While the funeral took place in the United States, McCann remains in Tanzania after authorities in Zanzibar reportedly retained his passport to ensure he remains available for further questioning during the ongoing investigation.
The incident happened at a hotel in Zanzibar where the couple had been staying during their holiday.
Early police findings suggested Ashlee may have died by suicide, but her family has continued to push for a deeper investigation. Relatives have pointed to reports of an argument between the couple just hours before the incident occurred.
