Trump Warns Iran of ‘All Hell’ in 48 Hours Over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump on Saturday sent the United States and Iran feud towards the brink of confrontation after issuing a 48-hour countdown on Truth Social, stating that Tehran could be under fire when “all hell will go down on them“.

The former president posted on his social truth social platform late on Saturday, recalling the earlier demands with reference to the Strait of Hormuz; an incredibly strategic, narrow waterway that controls approximately one-third of global oil exports. There is no officially confirmed military plans, but the harsh, timely and very public statement sparked concern amongst officials and military experts worldwide.

Experts are currently looking for potential signs that a military operation is being planned. One such sign is the possibility of increased US naval activity in the Persian Gulf, particularly with regards to carrier strike groups and destroyers which are reportedly within the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz. Any increased buildup may imply that a large-scale operation has been planned to ensure the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, or to respond to possible provocations by Iran.

It is thought that precise airstrikes may also be used against Iran’s energy sector, such as refineries and oil terminals and power stations, with a view to crippling its economy without full scale war.

Furthermore, Iran’s military structure may also be attacked; facilities which may be controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) including its missiles and navy could be among the first targets for a smaller-scale strike.

Cyber operations have also proved successful in prior confrontations between the US and Iran. U.S. Strikes have often involved the utilization of cyber operations targeting Iranian systems before and alongside physical strikes.

The urgency of this statement has also brought focus back onto the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and the effects which could be seen in international oil markets should there be any interruption, even brief, to trade at the vital trade route. This may send global oil prices soaring and trigger an economic crisis.

The tone of the ultimatum appears to echo the same intense rhetoric as back in 2020, which saw the killing of Qasem Soleimani on January 3rd. This situation brought the US and Iran to the brink of full scale war.

Tehran has not yet officially responded to Donald Trump’s statement. Historically Iran has threatened retribution on any attack on the state, potentially by jeopardizing the flow of international shipping in the region and possibly even by attacking US interests. As the 48-hour countdown now begins, governments are waiting anxiously for actual signals such as troop movements or airspace activity.
