The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) has announced the death of a Tanzanian seafarer, Macha Maregesi Mongu, who died after the vessel he was working on was attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
In an official statement, TASAC said the incident occurred on May 3, 2026, while the deceased was on duty aboard a tug boat identified as VOLANS, bearing IMO number 929856 and flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates.
The vessel was reportedly en route from the UAE to Oman at the time of the attack.
“TASAC extends its deepest condolences following this loss and stands with the family, relatives, and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement said.
The agency added that it is working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation to follow up on the incident and facilitate the return of the body to Tanzania once recovered.
TASAC also joined the International Maritime Organization in stressing the need to protect seafarers, especially in high-risk maritime zones.
The agency noted that areas such as the Strait of Hormuz fall under internationally recognised navigation rights, including the principle of innocent passage as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
