Mali’s transitional president Assimi Goïta has appointed himself defense minister, adding the role to his current position as head of state.
The move follows reports that Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in attacks linked to fighters from JNIM and Tuareg rebel groups.
Camara had been a key figure in strengthening Mali’s military cooperation with Russia, and his reported death is seen as a significant blow to the country’s defence leadership.
Under the changes, Goïta will directly oversee the military and security apparatus, working alongside army chief Oumar Diarra, who has been appointed deputy defense minister.
Mali has faced a worsening security situation in recent years, with increasing attacks by armed groups and reports of territories slipping out of government control.
Goïta came to power in 2020 through a military coup as a colonel and has since risen to the rank of general. He has repeatedly pledged to restore stability.
However, analysts say the security challenges remain deep, with doubts over how quickly the transitional government can contain the insurgency.
Authorities have not released detailed information about the circumstances surrounding Camara’s reported death, as military operations continue in several parts of the country.
