Every single day, perhaps every second, we are forced to make decisions. They are not always life-altering choices; more often, they are the quiet, relentless ones: what to eat, which bill to pay first, what task to prioritize, who to respond to, or what to delegate. Every decision, no matter how small, exacts a hidden toll on our energy.
Sometimes, doing the right thing does not feel good. We can experience a heavy sense of depression even while making the absolute best choices; happiness is not always present just because we made the right call. Yet, we push forward and do it anyway.
This decision fatigue explains so much about how we interact with one another. When someone stays quiet, it is rarely because they have nothing to say; more often, it is because there is simply too much happening inside their mind.
When someone withdraws or hesitates to reply, it is seldom a lack of care, but rather the sheer exhaustion of having to make one more choice. Because everyone is carrying invisible burdens, we ought to hold fewer rigid expectations of others. We never truly know if someone is navigating a struggle far worse than anything we might imagine.
Making decisions is difficult, but executing them can be even harder. As human beings, we must cultivate the grace to hold space for others to refrain from demanding that they make decisions for us when their reserves are low. We need to listen more and speak less, offering a quiet, supportive presence instead of pressure.
The most profound realization is that when we feel utterly incapable of making a decision, it isn’t true that we lack the ability. Rather, the “decision room” inside our minds has simply run empty. In those moments, we must give ourselves permission to pause: to quiet the noise, refill our thoughts, learn, speak less, and simply observe.
