Rwandan President Paul Kagame met with Bill Gates in Kigali on Monday, July 20, for talks focused on strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and the Gates Foundation across several areas considered important to the country’s development.
Gates, the founder and chair of the Gates Foundation, held discussions with Kagame on expanding the foundation’s longstanding partnership with Rwanda, according to information shared following the meeting.
The talks focused on accelerating cooperation in health, agricultural transformation, artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure, to support Rwanda’s development priorities.
Health remains one of the main areas of cooperation between Rwanda and the Gates Foundation, which has supported initiatives in the country and across Africa aimed at improving healthcare systems, disease prevention and access to essential health services.
The two sides also discussed agriculture, an important part of Rwanda’s economy and a key sector in the country’s efforts to improve food security and increase the incomes of farmers.
The growing role of artificial intelligence was another major topic of the meeting. As governments across Africa explore ways to use AI in healthcare, education, agriculture and public administration, Rwanda has increasingly positioned itself as a technology-focused country seeking to expand its digital economy.
The discussions also included digital public infrastructure, which refers to digital systems that allow governments and citizens to access essential services more efficiently. Such systems can include digital identity, payment platforms and data-sharing infrastructure.
For Rwanda, expanding digital public infrastructure is part of a wider effort to modernize public services and support the growth of technology-based businesses.
The meeting comes as the Gates Foundation continues to work with governments and development partners across Africa on issues including health, food security, agricultural productivity and technology.
The foundation has previously been involved in efforts to support Rwanda’s health and agricultural sectors, making the latest discussions an opportunity to explore how existing cooperation can be expanded into emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and digital systems.
Kagame has frequently promoted technology and innovation as key parts of Rwanda’s long-term development strategy. The country has invested heavily in digital services and technology infrastructure as it seeks to establish itself as a regional center for innovation and business.
The meeting with Gates therefore brings together two major areas of interest for Rwanda: strengthening traditional development programmes in health and agriculture while also exploring newer technologies that could help transform the country’s economy.
The discussions are expected to contribute to further cooperation between Rwanda and the Gates Foundation as both sides look for ways to support the country’s development goals in the coming years.
