Kenya signs $35m deal with Tanzanian investor to build 10 maternal hospitals

Kenyan President William Ruto has welcomed a $35 million investment by Amsons Group to build 10 maternal and child health hospitals across the country over the next three years.

Speaking at State House in Nairobi during the signing of the project agreement, Ruto described the initiative as a major step toward improving maternal healthcare outcomes.

This is a divine intervention,” he said, linking the project to ongoing efforts to reduce deaths among mothers and newborns.

The project, led by Tanzanian businessman Edha Nahdi, is expected to cost about 4.5 billion Kenyan shillings and will be implemented between the 2026/27 and 2028/29 financial years.

Ruto said Kenya continues to face serious challenges in maternal health, with an estimated 3,600 women and 5,000 newborns dying each year during childbirth.

Too many mothers and children are still dying in hospitals, this is unacceptable,” he said. “Mothers and children should never die while giving life.”

The planned facilities will be spread across several regions, including Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot, targeting areas with limited access to specialised care.

Each hospital is expected to have a capacity of 250 beds and will provide emergency obstetric services, referrals, and inpatient care, aimed at strengthening support for women during pregnancy and childbirth.

Ruto said the government will support the project through staffing, medical equipment, and integration into the national health system, describing the partnership as a significant boost to healthcare delivery.

He added that the investment reflects growing private sector involvement not just in business, but in social development, particularly in strengthening healthcare systems.
