Woman Who Expected Twins Gives Birth to Four Babies in Tanzania

A 28-year-old woman from Moshi in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region has given birth to quadruplets at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), with doctors placing both the mother and the babies under close medical observation after the children were born prematurely.

The mother, identified as Rachel Simba, delivered three girls and one boy during the rare birth at the northern Tanzania referral hospital.

Speaking to local media from her hospital bed, Rachel said this is her second childbirth.

Her first pregnancy resulted in one baby boy, while doctors had informed her during this pregnancy that she was carrying twins.

However, she said she was shocked to learn during delivery that she was actually carrying four babies.

I knew I would have twins, but I did not expect to give birth to four children at the same time,” she said.

The quadruplets were born after a pregnancy of seven months and three weeks, meaning the babies arrived several weeks before full-term delivery. Medical experts say multiple pregnancies, such as quadruplets, often lead to premature births because of the pressure placed on the mother’s body and limited space inside the womb.

Medical staff at KCMC confirmed that the babies were born prematurely and remain under special observation as doctors monitor their health condition.

Multiple births involving quadruplets are considered medically rare and often require intensive neonatal care because premature delivery is common.

Rachel has now appealed to relatives, friends, and Tanzanians for support as she prepares to care for the newborns.

She said the family will need help with food, clothing, medical needs, and other essentials required to raise the children.
