Ethiopia, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a landlocked East African country with one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Its capital city is Addis Ababa, which also hosts the headquarters of the African Union. Ethiopia is known for its cultural heritage, historic kingdoms, and growing role in African politics and economics.
Ethiopia heads into its seventh general election since 1991 on June 1, but many observers, including the Swahili Today analysts, believe the outcome is already decided long before the first ballot is counted.
Ethiopia has issued a stern diplomatic demand for neighbouring Eritrea to “immediately withdraw” its troops from Ethiopian territory, accusing Asmara of supporting local rebel fighters and raising fears of a return to widespread conflict in the Horn of Africa.
