Abiy Ahmed Ali is an Ethiopian politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 2018. Born in the Oromia region in 1976, Abiy came to power amid widespread political unrest and quickly introduced reforms aimed at expanding political freedoms, improving regional relations, and modernizing the country. He received the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end a long-running conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. His tenure has also been marked by significant challenges, including the Tigray conflict, ethnic tensions, economic pressures, and debates over Ethiopia’s political future, making him one of Africa’s most influential and closely watched leaders.
Ethiopia heads into its seventh general election since 1991 on June 1, but many observers, including the Swahili Today analysts, believe the outcome is already decided long before the first ballot is counted.
