U.S. Vice Mayor Found Dead and Wrapped in Trash Bags, Husband Charged With Murder

Nancy Metayer Bowen, the vice mayor for the Florida city of Coral Springs, was found dead in her home, and her husband has been arrested on charges related to suspected domestic violence.

Nancy Metayer Bowen was discovered dead in her residence on Wednesday, and officials arrived at the scene following a welfare check.

Stephen Bowen, 40, Nancy Metayer Bowen’s husband, was taken into custody, according to authorities, and is now facing a charge of first-degree murder with premeditation as well as a charge for tampering with evidence.

Authorities first received the alert when community leaders worried the vice mayor missed meetings, and she could not be reached.

Once officers made entry to the residence, they discovered her body inside, beginning what the officials say is a investigation into domestic violence.

Metayer Bowen’s body was found by officials upstairs and wrapped under black trash bags and blankets, according to search warrants submitted by authorities in support of her husband’s charge.

Prosecutors say Stephen Bowen later called a family member to report that he had shot his wife the previous night. He was later detained with license plate technology, but three hours after his wife was discovered to be dead.

Officials also say Stephen Bowen threw out evidence of the suspected weapon used in the murder. They believe he gave away personal belongings which may be considered evidence of the weapon and have confirmed that no public danger remains with the suspect now in custody.
