LAMU, Kenya – Several car carriers ships had started calling Lamu Port in Kenya due to heightened security threat in Strait of Hormuz and change in global shipping lanes.
At least three car carrier ships have allegedly changed course which included 3,800 vehicles from Yokohama to Jebel Ali, Dubai.
The diversion is attributed to increasing tension and threat within Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the busiest sea chokepoint of the world. It carries major proportion of energy shipments of the world and security is constantly being threatened in the narrow strait. This is why shipping companies have started using alternate port facilities, such as that of Lamu.
This has led to the surprise calls at East African port like Lamu, with thousands of cars held until new logistics plans are formulated. Experts predict Lamu port could be the emergency logistic hub for the region as long as disruptions persist in the Middle Eastern trade routes. The event has led to shipping delays.
