Lagos Goes Green: Big Waste-to-Wealth Biogas Project Launches at Ikosi Market | Instagram
Officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) say about 50 % of the city’s waste is organic and suitable for conversion into energy through anaerobic digestion, which produces biogas that can be used for power and cooking.
The biodigester at Ikosi Market was planned as part of the city’s broader push to cut landfill waste while creating local energy resources, including power for market facilities and gas for traders who rely on cooking fuel.
LAWMA officers and partners have been encouraging waste segregation at the source so the system can reliably feed organic material into the digester, turning what used to be trash into a usable resource.
Environmental groups and business partners argue these kinds of projects strengthen Lagos’s circular economy efforts and help reduce methane emissions from rotting waste in landfills across the state.
