US President Donald Trump has launched a sharp verbal attack on Olympian Hunter Hess, labeling him a “real loser” following controversial remarks the athlete made about representing the United States on the international stage.
Trump’s comments came after Hess suggested he felt conflicted about competing under the US flag, remarks that quickly spread online and drew criticism from conservative figures and patriotic groups. Trump, on his Truth social account, accused the athlete of disrespecting the country and the opportunities it had given him.
“U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump framed the controversy as part of a broader cultural divide, accusing some public figures and athletes of “running down America” while benefiting from its global influence. Trump has frequently targeted athletes and entertainers over similar issues, particularly those who criticize US institutions or symbols.

Hess has not directly responded to Trump’s remarks, but supporters of the athlete say his comments were taken out of context and reflected personal reflection rather than rejection of national identity. Critics, however, argue that any ambiguity about representing the country undermines the spirit of international competition.
