A Air Canada aircraft collided with an airport fire truck while moving on the ground at LaGuardia Airport on Monday, leaving at least two pilots dead, according to early reports.
The incident happened during what appears to have been a ground movement phase, not during takeoff or landing. Initial information suggests the aircraft was taxiing when it struck an emergency vehicle positioned on or near the runway.
Emergency crews responded immediately, with fire and rescue teams rushing to the scene as smoke was seen rising from part of the aircraft. Airport operations were briefly disrupted, with some flights delayed as authorities secured the area.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the two pilots reported killed. It remains unclear whether there were additional injuries among crew members or ground personnel.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the collision, focusing on how the aircraft and emergency vehicle ended up in the same path. Early attention is expected to center on communication between ground control and emergency responders.
Air Canada has acknowledged the incident and said it is working with U.S. authorities to gather more details. The airline has not yet confirmed casualty figures in an official statement.
LaGuardia, one of New York’s busiest airports, continued limited operations as investigators began examining the wreckage and reviewing air traffic control recordings.
