Two killed and 22 police officers injured in violent protests in Kenya over M-Pesa Agent’s Death

MIGORI, Kenya – Riots have broken out in Nyatike sub-county in Migori County, in western Kenya, following the murder of a businessman in the area who operated as M-Pesa agent called Peter Onyango Midiala, on Thursday night, March 12, at Osiri Junction by suspected robbers.

Angry protestors took to the streets demanding justice for the killing leading to a clash between them and police officers. Two civilians are reported to have died while at least 22 police officers were injured some critically.

Local government officials said the destruction of business premises and vehicles had been witnessed during the protests as people complain of an increase in violent crime targeting traders, including armed robberies and gun attacks.

The attack, which saw a senior police officer among those injured while trying to disperse the mob, has seen investigations leading to the arrest of a politician over the murder. Security personnel were later deployed in different parts of Migori town to ensure the place remains in peace.
