Authorities in Kuwait revealed that a major airport facility was struck by a drone attack and that normal operations at the airport were temporarily suspended while a security inquiry into the incident was conducted.
Aviation officials confirmed that several drones had struck a location within the confines of the airport, causing some structural damage at the airport, but that no one was injured. The area in which the strike was focused was apparently related to civilian aviation, but the officials would not elaborate on which areas within the airport perimeter had actually been hit.
Normal flight operations at the airport had to be halted as security personnel scrambled to ensure that all staff and passengers were safe. Officials at the aviation authority released a statement saying that their initial findings suggested that “damage to structure was seen, [but] there were no injuries”, with authorities investigating how and why drones were able to reach the airport. A comprehensive review has been started to determine if the drone attacks are related, as well as if they are part of a wider conspiracy. As a consequence, security at airports in the Middle East are being evaluated on potential drone threats, which may prompt the implementation of further security procedures.
