ARUSHA, Tanzania – The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, was appointed the Chairman of the East African Community during the 25 th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State, held in Arusha, Tanzania.
Museveni has now replaced the President of Kenya William Ruto, as the chairman, who led the regional bloc under the organization’s system of rotational leadership.
The Chair of the EAC rotates between Heads of State of member countries and directs the political direction of the regional bloc. Issues such as regional trade, infrastructure projects and security cooperation were among those discussed by the leaders of East African countries at the summit.
Today the EAC is comprised of: Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia.
It has been stated by the summit officials that this leadership transition, signifies the continuation of efforts aimed at reinforcing integration and cooperation within East Africa.
