WASHINGTON D.C., U.S.A – US President Donald Trump declared that the next Iranian Supreme Leader would not be able to last without the approval of the United States before Tehran announced a successor to the deceased leader.
Donald Trump had made the statement in a media interview where he discussed about the leadership issue in Iran following the death of Ali Khamenei.
Trump claimed that the next leader of Iran is not going to be there for a long time without Washington’s approval.
“The next leader of Iran is not going to last long without our approval,” Trump told the media in the interview.
The comments had come during the time Iranian clerical leadership were trying to decide their new Supreme Leader, following the death of Khamenei who served the country as the leader for over three decades.
In Iran, the leader is selected by the Assembly of Experts, an assembly of 86 members who can elect and supervise the Supreme Leader and it’s Mojtaba Khamenei who won the postion to become the next Supremen Leader.
The Supreme Leader, who holds the highest political and religious power, controls all key state institutions, including military and Judiciary.
Trump’s remark was closely watched around the globe as Iran chose a successor during conflict between Iran, United States and Israel.
Iranian officials have always said that selection of Supreme Leader of Iran is an internal affair of the country and can not be decided by any foreign country.
The selection of a successor was underway at the time of this report amid protests by Iran’s clerical leadership who were deciding as to who is going to take the important position after Khamenei.
