Tanzanian Diplomat Stephen Mbundi Appointed New EAC Secretary General

ARUSHA, Tanzania – Ambassador Stephen Mbundi, a Tanzanian diplomat, has become the new Secretary General of East African Community (EAC) at the 25 th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State of EAC held in Arusha.

Stephen Mbundi has been appointed the new Secretary General of the East African Community during the heads of State summit in Arusha, Tanzania. His candidature was approved by heads of state at a meeting for member states which is the most pivotal summit on regional integration and cooperation for bloc.

Mbundi, an experienced Tanzanian diplomat, now takes over leadership of a regional block in charge of developing economic integrations, trade policies and political partnerships within member countries.

The member countries currently include Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi. Mbundi is to be responsible for the coordination and implementation of EAC regional projects and agreements.

Senior government officials who were present at the summit have confirmed that the choice made was part of the bloc’s system for distributing leadership posts.
