Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will not attend the 25th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community. The summit is scheduled for March 7. It will be held at the bloc’s headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
Officials confirmed that both leaders have instead sent senior representatives to attend the meeting on their behalf.
Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva will represent Rwanda. He arrived earlier at Kilimanjaro International Airport. He is here to take part in the regional gathering.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has also delegated a senior government official to represent President Tshisekedi during the summit discussions.
The meeting in Arusha is expected to bring together leaders and senior officials from EAC member states. They will discuss regional cooperation, trade, and security issues. The meeting will also cover progress on economic integration projects across East Africa.
Several delegations have already arrived in northern Tanzania. The summit remains one of the most important annual meetings of the regional bloc.
