Early this morning, a British military base in Cyprus was targeted by what appeared to be an Iranian-manufactured drone according to authorities who identified the base as RAF Akrotiri. Middle Eastern relations are growing more unstable as a new incident has developed.
RAF Akrotiri is one of the main overseas air bases of the United Kingdom, utilized for Royal Air Force (RAF) operations across the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean, and in recent conflicts, has been used for reconnaissance, logistical and combat support operations.
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense released that an unmanned aerial vehicle collided within the base’s perimeter. Preliminary reports have stated there is minimal structural damage, and there are no confirmed casualties as of yet. Military personnel at the base have been put on higher alert since the incident.
British authorities state the United Kingdom is not involved in any ongoing wars but the reported strike is being taken “very seriously.” The government spokesperson declared, “The United Kingdom is not at war. However, we will take all necessary measures to protect our forces and our sovereign assets.”
Although Britain has not directly blamed Iran for the drone strike, they state the device looks like previously used models manufactured in Iran that have been involved in prior attacks. No statement has been issued by the Iranian authorities.
RAF Akrotiri is strategically located within British Sovereign Base Areas off the southern coast of Cyprus, and is highly significant for NATO operations. This incident is being looked at as one of many U.S. And allied military attacks on Iranian posts with further drone and missile attacks from Iran in the Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean regions. Military security experts view the attack as an escalation into Western military operations in the broader Middle East and the participation of European nations in the conflict.
