The researchers conducting the survey state that “conservative floor” figures were the numbers quoted before, so this new independent figure provides a “benchmark”. It is reported that more than 75,000 individuals have died violently since October 7, 2023. This figure, derived from a household survey and reported in The Lancet Global Health,h is much larger than earlier estimates from regional health agencies and confirms earlier figures with very high female, child, and elderly death percentages.

Researchers involved in the survey state that the earlier figures compiled are only conservative “floors” and that the new, independently-derived figure gives a clearer basis on which to understand the sheer size of loss.

Human rights organizations had expressed deep concern over the protracted crisis and indicated that the number of deaths caused indirectly (by disease, starvation, or lack of healthcare) is still significantly higher, though the figure 75,000+ refers only to the confirmed deaths by violence within the time period of the survey.
