Ibrahim Traore

Captain Ibrahim Traoré is the interim leader of Burkina Faso, having seized power in a September 2022 military coup. Born in 1988, he is currently the world’s youngest head of state. A career military officer, Traoré studied geology before joining the armed forces and serving in counter-insurgency operations. His leadership is defined by a strong pan-Africanist, anti-imperialist stance and a shift away from traditional Western allies, particularly France, toward closer ties with Russia. He has gained significant popularity among West African youth by promising to restore national security and sovereign control over Burkina Faso’s resources.
