Zimbabwe’s cabinet has approved draft constitutional amendments that could allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until at least 2030, intensifying a bitter national debate over democracy and governance. The plan, endorsed at a meeting on Tuesday, proposes changing the Constitution to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five years to seven years and to shift the method of choosing a president from direct popular vote to election by Members of Parliament.

Zambia’s High Court has ordered the seizure of assets worth more than $1.3 million from Dalitso Lungu, the son of former president Edgar Lungu, after ruling that he could not credibly explain how he acquired 79 vehicles, 23 parcels of land and other properties. The ruling by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court in Lusaka on Monday follows an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions arguing that the assets were “tainted” and likely linked to unlawful activity. Dalitso is reported to have failed to offer verifiable evidence that the wealth was lawfully obtained.
