Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 2026 Munich Security Conference, focusing on diplomatic discussions over Greenland’s status and US strategic interests in the Arctic.
Frederiksen said the meeting was “constructive,” and that work will continue as agreed in a high-level working group involving Denmark, Greenland and the United States.
The talks are part of ongoing diplomatic efforts triggered by renewed US pressure regarding Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark with a vital strategic position amid broader Arctic security concerns involving Russia and China.
Reuters reporting indicates that the working group aims to address US security concerns while respecting Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic interests, though officials have said the process is still in its early stages.
The discussions occur against a backdrop of tensions that have strained some NATO ties, as the Trump administration has emphasized the island’s strategic role and sought deeper engagement in the Arctic.
Further meetings are expected in the coming weeks as all parties seek to balance security cooperation with respect for Greenland’s autonomy and Denmark’s territorial integrity.
