Domingos Simões Pereira | Accord
Domingos Simões Pereira, head of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and a central opposition figure, is scheduled to face a military court over accusations linking him to multiple coup plots, judicial and military sources said.
Pereira was previously arrested during a military coup in November 2025, which deposed then-president Umaro Sissoco Embaló just days after elections. He was released from detention late last month but had been placed under house arrest amid ongoing inquiries.
Military authorities say Pereira may have been involved in alleged plots to destabilize the state, including attempts in late 2023 and October 2025, though he has not publicly responded to the claims.
The summons comes in a context of heightened political uncertainty. Guinea-Bissau has a history of coups and attempted takeovers since independence, and the current transitional government has imprisoned and questioned several senior politicians since seizing power.
Opposition groups argue the charges are politically motivated and designed to weaken dissent and opposition ahead of scheduled future elections, a narrative that reflects broader concerns about democratic backsliding under the current military regime.
