Ruto Calls for UN Reform, Positions Nairobi as Africa’s Diplomatic Hub
Kenya’s President William Ruto launched the 2026 Diplomatic Brief in Nairobi today, demanding the United Nations Security Council be reformed to include Africa with permanent representation, while boosting Kenya’s global diplomatic role.
Speaking at State House before ambassadors and heads of international organisations, Ruto said Kenya supports a rules-based international order and urged deeper reforms of multilateral institutions. He repeated Africa’s long-standing call to address the lack of permanent seats for African states on the UN Security Council.
Ruto argued the current composition of the Security Council undermines the credibility of the United Nations, noting that Africa carries a large share of peacekeeping responsibilities yet has no permanent representation.
The President also highlighted Nairobi’s diplomatic footprint, saying Kenya hosts the UN’s only headquarters in Africa and the Global South, and that the city should be seen as a continental diplomatic hub.
Beyond the UN reform push, Ruto linked Kenya’s broader foreign policy to strengthening African multilateral institutions, advocating for stronger African Union oversight and deeper engagement in regional peace initiatives.
