Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late ex-president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, was on Thursday arrested in Johannesburg over a shooting incident where a gardener at his Hyde Park house was shot and critically injured. South African police announced.
The police have revealed that the incident happened at the house in a posh area of Hyde Park in Johannesburg, after the 23-year-old employee was shot. A probe has begun after two men, Mugabe and an adult man, were arrested at the scene with attempts to murder the gardener and other pending issues yet to be found, they said in a report.
Gauteng police revealed they attended the scene after an emergency call had been made regarding the sound of gunshots from the premises, the employee was found to have been injured and thus both men were arrested at the Hyde Park area, Col. Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated to the media while saying they were still searching the premises in question for a firearm, a bullet case has been recovered with investigators trying to determine circumstances leading to the firing.
Neighbors also stated Mugabe was reluctant at first to allow police inside the premises, but later agreed to be handcuffed before being taken away, with officials revealing the gardener was transported to a Johannesburg hospital after being confirmed in critical condition.
Details are, though, scarce about how the incident occurred, as well as a potential motive. Law enforcers have been observed to comb the property while assisted by dog units looking for the lost firearm in connection with the ongoing murder investigation.
This occurrence puts Mugabe back in the news, with his past having seen him being connected with several cases in the South African courts; yet, they didn’t affect him in the long run, as his charges were either dismissed or lightened.
