UNESCO and the Government of Japan conducted a high-level visit today to the historic Majestic Cinema in Stone Town, part of a project to transform the site into a modern cultural hub.

Officials from UNESCO, Japanese representatives and Zanzibar authorities toured the aging structure, which has long stood as one of Stone Town’s early cinema landmarks. The visit focused on ongoing plans to restore and repurpose the building for arts, film and music events.

The project aims to preserve the architectural heritage of the Majestic Cinema while upgrading it to host international festivals and local productions. Organisers say the venue could support major cultural events such as Sauti za Busara, one of East Africa’s best-known music festivals held annually in Zanzibar.

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has seen increased efforts in recent years to balance conservation with modern cultural use. The proposed renovation would include structural rehabilitation, improved acoustics and facilities suited for screenings, performances and community programs.

Japanese support is part of broader cultural cooperation initiatives that focus on heritage preservation and creative industries. Officials said the partnership reflects shared interest in safeguarding historic sites while expanding opportunities for young artists and cultural entrepreneurs.

Local cultural stakeholders welcomed the visit, noting that a revived Majestic Cinema could strengthen Zanzibar’s position as a regional arts destination and provide a year-round venue for film, music and theatre.

Technical assessments are expected to continue in the coming weeks as stakeholders finalise restoration plans and funding frameworks.
