The Chairperson of the African Union has condemned what he described as the “extermination” of Palestinians in Gaza, issuing a sharp statement during the ongoing summit in Addis Ababa.
Addressing heads of state and delegates at the African Union headquarters, the AU Chair said the scale of destruction and civilian casualties in Gaza amounts to collective punishment and violates international humanitarian law. He called for an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war.
The remarks come amid continued fighting between Hamas and Israel, with mounting civilian deaths, displacement and a worsening humanitarian crisis in the enclave. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned of collapsing health systems, food shortages and growing disease outbreaks.
In his address, the AU Chair urged the international community to act decisively to protect civilians and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access. He also reaffirmed the continent’s long-standing support for a two-state solution based on internationally recognized borders.
Several African leaders at the summit echoed similar concerns, describing the situation in Gaza as intolerable and calling for accountability under international law. The issue has featured prominently in corridor discussions at the summit, alongside debates over infrastructure financing and economic reform.
The statement was delivered as diplomatic efforts continue at the United Nations and other international platforms, with no immediate breakthrough announced at the time of the address.
